Introduction to Truro Cathedral
In recent years, Truro Cathedral has become a great venue for the community with many events that you would not perhaps expect. I would say that of these the one I least expected is the Cathedral Masquerade Ball on New Years Eve. It looks to be an amazing black tie event with aerial performers and alcohol till the early hours.
It isn't such a stretch to imagine concerts and the like, if you also have a ball there, but they regularly have silent disco's and yoga too. Truro and Penwith College hold their graduation ceremony here. There is also a popular Christmas Market.
My absolute favourite events appear to be annual at the moment. The first is by an artist called Luke Jerram, who creates huge models of different celestial bodies, such as the moon, planets and the sun. These have featured so far in the autumn. In January, there have been displays by Luxmuralis which feature a staggering array of projections set to sound. Not to be missed!
It's a lovely building, with incredible stonework. There is a side chapel called St Mary's Aisle and aisles either side of the sanctuary, with the choir area and organ. These aisles and the space behind the sanctuary often have exhibitions and different things to look at.
The cafe used to be in the quarter house directly accessible from the cathedral but I don't think there is currently a cafe there. I think it moved out in to a nearby building but people didn't realise it was there. Its a shame because you used to be able to get great food at a reasonable price.
They offer a number of tours that you can book to get access to the tower and the roof, spaces that are not normally accessible. They also offer tours to the upper areas during some of the events, so you can see things from a different angle.
Of course the cathedral still has a full calendar of religious events too, but it's lovely to see it at the heart of the community in so many ways. My favourite is Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, it really helps get me in to the Christmas spirit!
